Joe Slezak, Clayton Dyess, Jose-Miguel Yamal & Larry Slezak
As I lover of jazz, one of my many favorite passages in Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road” describes the character of Dean Moriarty (Neil Cassidy) as he runs down the street yelling with excitement over a sax player who is playing in a night club. He hears the music from outside and he is so ecstatic that he can’t contain himself; he knows something amazing is happening inside and he wants to be a part of it.
Copyright prevents me from quoting from Kerouac, but I recommend finding the passage and reading it, and then heading over to Ovations Jazz Club on Thursday May 24. Like Dean Moriarty, you may end up having to yell your approval before you actually get inside the club to hear the Larry Slezak Organ Band because the karmic-cosmic-nobody-plays-like-Larry vibes will greet you in the parking lot.
Larry Slezak on tenor sax is joined by Jose-Miguel Yamal on Hammond B3 Organ (not a keyboard that sounds like an organ, but an actual Hammond), Clayton Dyess on guitar, and Joe Slezak on drums. It is fast and furious bebop…the likes of which would have sent Dean Moriarty into jazz paradise. For those of you who might be new to jazz, you can still clearly discern the melody and harmonies in this particular style of jazz…as in you’ll love it and so will your parents, and your grandparents, and pretty much anyone with ears. Jazz’ roots in the blues are also very evident both stylistically and because of the organ sound. But forget style and genre, Larry plays from his heart and gives every tune everything he has, and his compadres are pretty happening too.
Ovations is at 2536 Times Blvd, just off Kirby. 713 522-9801. You don’t have to be over 21 to get in. The cover is $12. There is a $6 cover available for students.
The music is from 8:00 to 11:00. No food but full bar. But the music is so good you can eat it.
